CRAZY MAKING” The Art of Sherri Wolfgang, Working through a Family’s Struggle with Mental Illness, at City Lights, August 24 to Sept. 17.

Artist’s Reception Thurs, Sept. 1 , 5:30-8 p.m. “Art was a catharsis to let out what was happening to my family, and through this horrific and tragic journey, painting became my sanity and kept my well-being.” The purpose of this exhibit is to lift the veil from the condition of living with mental illness, Wolfgang believes, “It is time to rid families and individuals of  the shame  caused by the social stigma attached to mental illness and bring awareness to the fact that we all know someone who struggles with this,” Through rich drawings and paintings layered with paint, resin and writing the viewer will be submerged into the artists’s state of mind and willingness to overcome the unknown, unchartered territory that she found herself and her family.  Wolfgang’s expressive use of the figure and energetic applications of marks, line and brush strokes  create bold works on paper and wood. Some of these works contain harsh subject matter and profanity. This exhibit may not be appropriate for young children.

ARTIST’S TALK AND NAMI PRESENTAION,  SUNDAY, 9/11, 4 P.M.
Wolfgang hosted an artist’s talk on Sunday Sept. 11 at 4 p.m. and was joined by a guest speaker from NAMI.

NAMI is dedicated to the eradication of mental illnesses and to the improvement of the quality of life of all whose lives are affected by these diseases. NAMI recognizes that the key concepts of recovery, resiliency and support are essential to improving the wellness and quality of life of all persons affected by mental illness.
